• I realise how far I am away from real things. Physical things. Things that give me joy. I never touch the road that carries my punctured cycle except when I fall. I never have to till the soil that gave me my soya chunks. I mostly never touch my wet waste. And I’m very far away from owning a piece of motor and two wheels that will accelerate me far away from the city on the weekends.

  • I listened to this portion of Mazhai Thuli, at 4:17 after Vadivelu sang it at a function. I’ve attempted describing what I felt in English, but it does no justice, so I will wait to see if others feel so as well. Vadivelu’s singing in Mammannan also evoked similar feelings. I also learnt of Manivannan’s political history while reading about the film. And went onto to read about the Sri Lankan civil war and the TTamil Eelam.

ஊருக்காக ஆடும் கலைஞன் தன்னை மறப்பான் (the artist who performes for the village forgets themself)
தன் கண்ணீரை மூடிக்கொண்டு இன்பம் கொடுப்பான் (he will hide his tears and give joy)
    புலிகள் அழுவது ஏது (when do tigers cry?)
அட பறவையும் அழ அறியாது (even birds do not know crying)
போர்க்களம் நீ புகும்போது (when you are at war)
    முள் தைப்பது கால் அறியாது (your feet wont know a thorn)
மகனே மகனே காற்றுக்கு ஓய்வென்பது ஏது அட ஏது (son, son, what is rest for the wind?)
    கலைக்க்கொரு தோல்வி கிடையாது கிடையாது (there is no failure for art…)

I finally saw the film. I wonder if T.M Krishna has an opinion on the film, considering its context of a faceoff between a stuck-up barathanatyam patriarch and a folk dancer.

  • I have not been able to stop thinking of bikes. How much do they cost? Does weight matter so much? What are the EMIs like? Do i really need to invest so much so early in my career? I’ve also been seriously considering second hand bikes. But i do not know people who’ve purchased second hand bikes in bangalore, I’d like to hear about their experiences before I continue down this line.

I paused dreaming and went down to test drive the Suzuki VStrom 250SX and the Honda CB350 Hness. The VStrom was very well balanced and perfect for my height. It was spacious and felt vert stable on bumps. But the Honda had the pull… and man, I had fun driving it. It doesn’t stop the wind from hitting your face as you accelerate…and the gearbox lets you cruise with a very smooth, patient air…

  • I’ve been thinking about how maps create facts..and how sometimes I want them to create questions. This is in the context of “Where does hate live?”.

Some time ago I had written about the survey map of the Babri Masjid from 1950, here. The names, the colour and the preference to describe only certain elements makes this the only graphic description of the masjid from then. The next graphic memory in time was 92, when it was demolished and there are photographs of it.

While the platform looks like a dashboard that places statistical truths, it is not intended to be so.

Some folks suggested that it can be seen as an illustrative meta-archive. Around the same time, I scraped the archive of AltNews factchecks to be included. Over 3/5ths of the >5000 reports were placed.
