Safe Yelli began as a student response to street harassment in Yelahanka, Bangalore. It was quick to start a form and a map. Easy components to make for the internet, even in 2021. But what comes after the map? That is the question that plagued me and others. We hosted mapping parties looking at public infrastructure and vulnerability. We hosted workshops encouraging a critical perspective on gender and infrastructure.
SafeYelli still gets reports once a month. And it is an extremely sad situation for this to be normalised happenings: groping, staring, fear. To be able to successfully campaign for street safety, it needs pragmatic changes on the ground that goes beyond ‘safety islands’ that the Bangalore City Police have introduced or apps. I learnt a lot about the state of urban affairs from the engagements we did for Safe Yelli.
